If you know me, you’ll know that I am absolutely crazy about middle grade fiction. I just love it to pieces, and for that reason, I’m creating an extra special blog post detailing what I would love to see more of! Of course, this doesn’t cover everything. You may send me a manuscript that is completely unlike everything I mention in this post, and I may completely adore it! If you think we may be a good fit for each other, then send away! I’m more than happy to look at anything you send me!
Fantasy: Can I just say fantasy is the best? Of all the genres, fantasy is the one I read the most of. I’m open to trying just about anything that’s fantasy, but I do have general preferences. I adore atmospheric fantasy novels with lush world building and gorgeous writing. I want to sink into the world and never leave! The voice is massively important as well. I love a distinct voice that will snag me from the get-go. I love a strong dose of humor and tales that are equal parts dark as they are light. If there are dragons or demons, you get bonus points.
Some of my favorite MG fantasy novels include Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi, Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi, City of Islands by Kali Wallace, The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull, and just about anything and everything by Rick Riordan.
Science Fiction: Honestly, I don’t think there is nearly enough science fiction in the middle grade market right now. I’d love to see something along the lines of Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee. Give me all the space adventures, new planets and creatures, or advanced technology! Send me all the STEM!
Mystery: I love a good mystery when it crosses over into multiple genres. York: The Shadow Cipher by Laura Ruby is my favorite! I just love all of the characters and the complex world that surrounds them. I’m ridiculously excited for the next book in the series to come out. Other favorites include The 39 Clue series and Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett.
Horror: Send me all the ghosts and supernatural creatures! I love ghost stories. Anything along the lines of Lockwood & Co.: The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud and City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab will catch my interest.
